According to the United Nations, mankind has three years to stop global warming and then it is quite realistic to reduce emissions by half.
In 2019, people "gave" the planet 59 billion tons of carbon dioxide. To reduce emissions by 43% would take more time - ten years. This would help keep global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees. At the same time, the ways to reduce carbon emissions are cheap or even free, according to Phys.org.
First and foremost, all governments should switch to solar and wind power, reduce deforestation and restore the "lungs of the Earth".
At the same time, solar and wind energy is one of the cheapest and most affordable ways. Between 2010 and 2019, the unit cost of solar energy technologies fell by 85% and wind energy by 55%.
Other types of alternative sources, such as nuclear power and hydropower, have lower potential and higher costs.
Limiting deforestation and destruction of grasslands would reduce emissions by 3 to 8 billion tons. Switching to sustainable diets and reducing food waste would reduce emissions by another 2 billion tons. There are not as many opportunities in transportation, yet carbon-intensive energy sources would be helpful in this area as well.
According to Elmar Kriegler, a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Research, climate protection measures are economically feasible when viewed globally and over the long term.
At the same time, the report notes, current state policies still support the use of fossil fuels.
