Portuguese prosecutors have formally charged a suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a British girl who disappeared almost 15 years ago while on a family holiday in the southern European country, AP reports.

Faro's prosecutor's office did not name the suspect in a statement, but said it acted at the request of the German authorities and in coordination with British investigators.

In mid-2020, German police identified German citizen Christian Brückner as a suspect in the case.

McCann was 3 years old when she disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in the Algarve seaside town of Praia da Luz.

Brückner, 45, is serving a drug-related sentence in a German prison and faces a seven-year sentence for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal. Rape also happened in Praia da Luz.

Brückner denies any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance.
