Kazakhstan's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, will support amendments to the country's constitution, some of which exclude the mention of him from the country's basic law, he said in an interview with Kazakhstani political analyst Daniyar Ashimbayev at the upcoming 5 June referendum.
"Yes, on 5 June I will definitely use my right, given to me by the Constitution, and take part in voting at the referendum... All these years I supported his (President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev) actions to reform and further develop our country in every possible way. You can rest assured that I will support him this time too," he said in an interview, the text of which Ashimbayev posted on his Telegram channel.
Nazarbayev also noted that retaining certain powers after leaving office was necessary "for a smooth political transition and mitigation of possible contradictions in society and the power elite."
