The United States will send Ukraine American-made highly mobile artillery missile systems, known as HIMARS, as part of the 11th security assistance package for Ukraine.
Officials said the HIMARS will be equipped with munitions that will allow Ukraine to launch missiles to a range of about 80 kilometers.
This is far less than the maximum range of the systems, which is about 300 kilometers, but far more than anything that has been sent to Ukraine to date. For example, the M777 howitzers the U.S. sent to Ukraine last month marked a significant increase in range and power over previous systems, but even they have a maximum range of about 25 kilometers, CNN reported.
The new security assistance package, to be officially announced Wednesday, also includes air surveillance radars, additional Javelin anti-tank weapons, artillery shells, helicopters, tactical vehicles and spare parts.
