French President Emmanuel Macron, who considers the growth of the country's technology sector crucial to his plans for the overall economy, said Friday that he hopes for a sharp increase in the number of French technology startups by 2030, Reuters reported.

The French president said he wants the number of French tech startups to reach at least 100 by 2030, up from 27 currently.

"What target am I fixing for us? To try to develop 10 tech giants in Europe, in the coming five years, and to increase the number of our unicorns to at least 100 by 2030, which is feasible," Macron told the Paris VivaTech conference.

Macron's first election as president in 2017 also coincided with the launch of the startup site Station F in Paris.

Earlier this year, French online bank Qonto raised €486 million, technology and data management company Castor raised $23.5 million, and Shift Technology completed a $220 million fundraising round last year.

Macron also welcomed the fact that Paris has become home to some high-profile deals in the technology sector.

Last year, French cloud computing company OVHCloud went public, and French music streaming platform Deezer also plans to enter the Paris stock market.
