At least 31 people have died in the last two days in the northeastern Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya because of floods caused by powerful monsoon rains, NDTV reported Saturday.
The rains caused the water level in the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries to rise.
At least 12 people died due to floods and landslides in Assam, where about 1.9 million people are in the flood zone. Meghalaya authorities reported 19 deaths.
About 3,000 villages in two states have been flooded. Since last Wednesday, more than 800 mm of precipitation has fallen in some parts of the northeastern part of the country. Administrations in flood-stricken regions have issued alerts urging people not to leave their homes except in cases of emergency or medical emergencies.
Weather forecasters warn that the downpours will continue in the coming days.
