Unidentified assailants vandalized a Jewish cemetery in Istanbul on Thursday night, damaging 36 gravestones, Turkish Chief Rabbinate Foundation said on Friday, Ahval reported.

Dozens of gravestones in the Haskoy Cemetery in Beyoglu district were knocked over, the foundation said in a statement released on Twitter.

“We expect the perpetrators of this [act of] vandalism to be caught as soon as possible,” the foundation said in the statement addressing the Istanbul Governor’s Office and Interior Ministry.

Turkey is home to anywhere from 14,900 to 21,000 Jews, according to several Jewish organizations—down from 200,000 at the beginning of the 20th century

Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin condemned the incident on Twitter, and vowed that Turkish authorities will find the perpetrators.
