Ankara hopes that Washington will not succumb to the "game" of some US legislators, who oppose the potential sale of F-16s, Turkey's defense minister said.

His remarks came after the House of Representatives approved a bill that creates a new obstacle to any purchase by Turkey, Reuters reported.

Turkey wants to buy 40 F-16 fighter jets made by Lockheed Martin and upgrade kits... President Joe Biden has said he supports the sale, and his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan has said he believes the deal will happen after talks with Biden.

Last week, the House of Representatives approved legislation that would prohibit the sale of the fighter jets to Ankara unless the administration certifies that it is necessary for U.S. national security, and would also provide a description of specific steps taken to ensure they are not used for repeated unauthorized flights over Greece.

Akar said Tuesday that negotiations for the sale are ongoing and Turkey is closely monitoring the process, adding that U.S. officials recognize the importance of Turkey "as an ally in the fight against terrorism and migration."
