Afghanistan needs urgent funding from donor countries, as 6 million Afghans may soon face starvation due to the ongoing economic crisis in the country, Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said, Al Jazeera reported.
"Poverty is worsening, the population continues to grow, and the authorities do not have the budget to invest in their own future. It's clear to us that we need to renew some support [for the country]," Griffiths said.
Based on Griffiths's calculations, the country needs to provide $770 million urgently in order for the population to survive the coming winter.
The U.S. froze all assets of the central bank of Afghanistan in order to prevent representatives of the Taliban (banned in Russia) from accessing them. Joe Biden's administration made the decision to freeze the Afghan assets on August 15, the day the Taliban captured Kabul. According to some reports, more than $9 billion belonging to the Central Bank of Afghanistan are in U.S. accounts.
