Almost immediately after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the start of the sanctions war and the disruption of supply chains, grain prices on world markets rose, and by summer also fell sharply (wheat prices fell by about 40% and corn prices by 25% since spring).

Against this background, Armenia increased its grain imports. Particularly, in the first half of 2022, the country imported 187,392 tons of grain (this includes corn and barley export data - 38,998 tons and 18,176 tons, respectively) for a total of $47 million.

Imports of wheat amounted to 130,218 tons worth $34.4 million.

In the first half of 2021, 166289 tons of grain were imported (corn and barley export data were included - 28 000 tons and 3995 tons, respectively) for a total of $ 21 million.

Imports of wheat amounted to 65,039 tons worth $14.4 million.

It turns out that grain imports doubled in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period last year. .

Grains are imported to Armenia mainly from Russia, from where, according to some forecasts, the export of wheat in 2022 will increase to 32-33 million tons.
