The options for establishing new universities in Armenia are being discussed. Vahram Dumanyan, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, said this at Thursday’s press briefing at the government.

He assured that there will be no mechanical unifications, and the reform will be based on a meaningful idea aimed at creating proper conditions for raising the level of education in Armenia.

"There are universities [in Armenia] that do not function meaningfully even now. There are 12 state universities in Yerevan—although one or two universities could have been less—so the goal of forming up to eight universities as a result of the reforms is quite a large number. But the final goal, in any case, is not to get a specific number," added Dumanyan.

The minister stated that the level of education in some educational institutions in Armenia is quite high in some specialties, which is confirmed by various international ratings, but in order to increase the level of education throughout the country, the government needs to create proper conditions and standards for education.
