Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has become the world's longest reigning monarch since the death of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who previously held the title, the Daily Mail noted.

The Sultan of Brunei ascended the throne in 1967 and has ruled for nearly 55 years. While Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne for more than 70 years. The second longest reign of the living monarchs, as the publication notes, is now occupied by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, who ruled the country for over 70 years, died Sept. 8 in Scotland at age 96. She was Britain's longest reigning monarch.
