A powerful winter storm that hit California on Saturday is fraught with flooding, blizzards and avalanches, on top of frigid temperatures, The Associated Press reported.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures could drop below freezing in parts of the state, while downtown San Francisco could see record-low temperatures Saturday morning. The predicted temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) will be the coldest in the city since 2009, the weather service said.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, a region of about 6 million people. The weather service reported flash flooding Friday night in Ventura County, where up to 18 centimeters of rain fell.

In Los Angeles County, forecasters predicted life-threatening flash floods were possible near rivers, streams, urban areas, highways and areas scorched by wildfires. Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and many suburbs are in the threat zone.

Rain falling at a rate of up to one inch per hour raised fears of flooding or landslides. Evacuation warnings were issued in some areas. Residents were urged to be ready to flee at a moment's notice.
