German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in Tel Aviv on Saturday that the international community should focus on limiting the impact of military operations in Gaza on civilians, Reuters reported.
"All states, no matter who they belong to, that are willing to help stop human suffering must cooperate, even if they have to put up with the opposition," she told a news conference on the second day of her Middle East trip after meeting with her Israeli colleague Eli Cohen.
"This is what I proposed in the Gulf, in the West Bank, and today in Israel, and this is what I will also convey to Brussels (to European Union foreign ministers)," she added.
During the trip, Berbok traveled to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. She also met with Palestinian officials in Ramallah, the seat of Palestinian authority in the West Bank.
According to Berbok, it is unclear how Israel would be able to defend itself in the event of a general cease-fire. On the other hand, humanitarian cease-fire agreements are necessary to bring aid to Gaza and protect lives.
"I assured my colleague Eli Cohen of Germany's unwavering solidarity with Israel," Baerbock said.
"The world is watching a war that Israel did not start, with different preconceived notions about Israel's right to self-defense and the suffering of the people of Gaza, which Hamas uses as a shield," the German foreign minister added.
