Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has passed away in his 86th year of life.

"It is with great sadness and grief that we mourn ... the death of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait," the royal court said in a statement broadcast on state television.

Sheikh Nawaf was sworn in in September 2020 following the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who died in the United States at the age of 91.
