The Israeli army raided a village in southern Syria early Thursday morning “to detain several suspected agents of the Palestinian group Hamas,” the Associated Press reported.

Syrian officials said one person was killed and warned that such raids heighten tensions in the region, with villagers denying any ties to Hamas.

The Israeli army said those detained in the pre-dawn raid on Beit Jin were suspected of “planning attacks on Israel” and that weapons had also been found in the area.

They were taken to Israel for interrogation, the Israeli military said.

Syria's Interior Ministry said one person was killed and seven captured during the operation, while the father of the slain young man said he had a history of mental illness.
