The Middle East — and the entire world — could be plunged into a war with irreversible consequences due to the escalation of major military operations in the region, according to a statement from International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Mirjana Spoljaric.

"The intensification and spread of major military operations in the Middle East threatens to plunge the region — and the world — into a war with irreversible consequences," the statement said, released after the US strikes on Iran.

According to the ICRC head, the world cannot “withstand an endless war,” and compliance with international humanitarian law by states is “an obligation, not a choice.”
 She added that the ICRC is mobilizing its teams in Iran and Israel to meet the growing humanitarian needs in the region. At the same time, Spoljaric stressed that “no humanitarian action can replace political will to prioritize peace, stability, and human life.”
