The delays in Armenian cargo on the Armenian-Iranian border have purely technical reasons, Iranian ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani told a press conference Friday.

According to him, such technical problems arise on both sides.

"It happens that 300 trucks approach the [Armenian-Iranian] border, sometimes that number decreases. The accumulation of trucks leads to traffic jams. However, we are constantly in touch to facilitate this process. And if there are obstacles, we solve the problem. I want to say that yes, problems arise periodically, but they should not be presented as obstacles," Sobhani noted.

He noted that the capacity of the current bridge over the Araks River between the Armenian-Iranian border is 120 trucks, but now 600 trucks pass through it every day, and there are plans to build a second bridge over the Araks River. In this context, the Iranian ambassador to Armenia touched also upon the matter of participation of Iranian companies in road construction projects in Armenia’s Syunik Province.

“Road construction work in Syunik is making quite tangible progress. We have exceeded the planned work schedule by 3 percent. If we manage to maintain the current pace, we will be able to complete the construction even earlier than planned. There are no problems with the implementation of the work. We are determined and confident that after the completion of the work in various sections from [Armenia’s] Agarak [checkpoint on the border of Iran] to [the capital] Yerevan, a real revolution will occur in cargo transportation. Unfortunately, we are 30 years late in implementing this work,” said the Iranian ambassador to Armenia.
