The leader of the "Bright Armenia" party, Edmon Marukyan, has proposed nominating Archbishop Mikael Adjapahyan, head of the Shirak Diocese, as a candidate for the office of Prime Minister. He announced this on his Facebook page.

“I had a conversation with Hovik Agazaryan and Hakob Aslanyan. The results of our discussion are as follows:

I am ready to withdraw my candidacy in the process of expressing no confidence in the Prime Minister, and Agazaryan and Aslanyan are ready to nominate Archbishop Mikael Adjapahyan, if he agrees.

We call on all MPs—both from the opposition and the ruling faction—to support this initiative.

We propose to bring the issue to the Parliament and initiate a change of government through a constitutional process.

In this case, the two opposition parliamentary factions will have no reason not to join the impeachment initiative with Archbishop Mikael as the candidate, and the people will clearly and firmly support the process.

The two factions in the National Assembly must now declare that, in the event of Archbishop Mikael’s consent, they are ready to sign and join the no-confidence procedure. I don’t understand why you’re hesitating—are you waiting for him to be arrested first, and only then declare your support?

Even if Archbishop Mikael Adjapahyan is currently detained and later arrested by court decision, he can still be nominated as a candidate for Prime Minister by the united opposition.

According to procedure, he will have the right to deliver a one-hour speech in the National Assembly.

Naturally, any person elected Prime Minister as a result of this process will hold the position temporarily. His main mission will be to stabilize the country, restore unity, and organize transparent elections.

The acting Prime Minister will also be expected to release all political prisoners and halt the unlawful criminal prosecutions that began in recent days.

Therefore, if Archbishop Mikael is arrested, opposition MPs must not delay: they must go to Hakob Aslanyan’s office and sign the draft no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister.”
