American contractors guarding aid distribution sites in Gaza are using live ammunition and stun grenades as hungry Palestinians scramble for food, according to accounts and videos obtained by AP, the latter reports.
Two US contractors, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were revealing their employers’ internal operations, said they were coming forward because they were disturbed by what they considered dangerous and irresponsible practices.
Their accounts, as well as internal reports and correspondence from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation obtained by journalists, paint a picture of the conditions in at least one aid distribution point in this Palestinian enclave, Euronews reports.
The footage shows hundreds of Palestinians gathered waiting for food parcels. Men speaking English are heard discussing how to disperse the crowd, gunfire is heard, as well as the phrase “I think you hit one.” One contractor is heard saying he has arranged for a “show of force” by Israeli tanks.
AP sources said they recall at least one incident in which these contractors injured a person who had come to the aid station. They explained that they wanted to publicly express their concerns, noting that, in their opinion, the people hired for security are often not properly qualified.
A representative for a logistics company working with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said there were no serious injuries at any of the facilities. He said that in the first days of the stations’ opening, contractors actually fired warning shots when crowds gathered there.
