Heavy rains and ensuing floods in Beijing have killed 30 people and forced the evacuation of more than 80,000 residents, China Central Television reports.

According to reports, 28 of the dead were in the northern district of Miyun.

Highways and power lines were damaged in the area affected by the heavy rains.

The average rainfall in Beijing over the past few days has been about 166 mm. But in some areas of the Chinese capital, this figure has reached 544 mm.

Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping had ordered maximum efforts to avoid casualties.
