At least one person was killed and 16 were injured in a collision between a freight train and a tourist bus in Russia’s Leningrad Region, the latter’s administration said on Monday.

A bus carrying tourists to the Alexander-Svirsky Monastery and a freight train collided, the local police said, Interfax reports.

The accident occurred at about 6am at a railway junction between two stations.

The bus had crossed an unregulated railway crossing, police said.

The railway signaling system was working properly before the collision, said the press service of the Oktyabrsky Railways company of Russian Railways.

"The train conductor applied emergency braking, but the distance was not sufficient and the collision could not be prevented," the railway representatives added.

Only the people on the bus were injured, and seven of them are in severe condition.

A criminal case has been opened on charges of violating traffic rules, Fontanka reports.
