If the European Union (EU) wants to be a peaceful project, it should not demand that Georgia aggravate its relations with Russia, stated the speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili.

“I will explain once again. If you want to be a peaceful project, then you should not demand that a country that has been through three wars, being at war, should aggravate relations with Russia, which is what Brussels has done,” Papuashvili wrote on Facebook.

He noted that Georgia should not physically and psychologically harm itself on its path to EU membership.

The fact that the EU was created for peace does not mean that it automatically brings peace, the Georgian parliament speaker emphasized.

For the EU to be a peaceful project, it should not finance extremism, interfere in elections, engage in defamation, and encroach upon Georgia’s millennial values, added Papuashvili.

The EU delegation to Georgia on Tuesday had made a post on Facebook, arguing that the EU was created for peace, and therefore Georgia’s EU membership aspirations mean the country will become part of that peace project.
