German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he currently does not believe that the Israeli attack on a hospital in Gaza, which killed at least 20 people, was directed against journalists, Reuters reports.

“But the Israeli army and the Israeli government have promised to launch a comprehensive investigation into this incident,” Merz said at a press conference in Berlin. “And I would like to wait for the results of this investigation before making a final decision." 

On Monday, Israeli forces struck the Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza, killing at least 20 people, including five journalists working for international publications.

The German Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it was “shocked” by the strike and called for an investigation.
