Moscow believes that the release of Russian citizens by Baku will be an important step on the path to normalization of relations between the two parties, stated Maria Zakharova, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

According to Zakharova, Russia has petitioned to obtain permission for Russian consular staff to visit the compatriots detained in Azerbaijan and information about their health condition, but Baku has not yet given its consent.

“A request has been sent for the fourth meeting [of consular employees with the detainees], but the Azerbaijani side has not yet given its consent. We proceed from the fact that such an agreement will be obtained,” Zakharova said at a press briefing, answering a question from RIA Novosti.

In addition, according to her, a request was sent on July 2 regarding the health condition of these detainees and the provision of medical care to them.

“Unfortunately, we have not yet received a response [from Azerbaijan]. We also assume that we will receive it," added the Russia MFA spokesperson.
