Turkey’s response to the bill proves Ankara continues its policy of Armenian Genocide denial, said French Senator Isabelle Pasquet.  

However, imminence of elections cast doubt on president’s position on this initiative, she said during the debate held in French Senate on bill criminalizing the genocide denial.

“We want to remain committed to our position towards our Armenian counterparts. Challenging or underestimating of the facts should be punished from time to time.  The government of Turkey takes steps to desecrate the memory of the Armenians. We must not stand historical revisionism in our country. Our Armenian compatriots are right to expect our protection,” she said.

In his turn, Senator Jacques Mezard said the debate on genocide bill is a part of pre-election initiative of the President and all the other arguments are artificial.

“It is necessary to recognize the Commission’s opinion on the constitutional legality. This law is against freedom of expression. The law is not perfect, it has many flaws,” he added.
