Violence and arson have broken out at all Nepal-India border posts, with police posts set on fire amid growing unrest, India Today reports.

As the situation spiraled out of control, authorities ordered a complete closure of all border posts. Police officers in some affected areas have reportedly deserted their posts. Troops have additionally cordoned off Singha Durbar, the seat of Nepal's government ministries and offices, after protesters set fire to houses inside the complex.

The army entered the capital city Kathmandu after evacuating protesters and has taken control of its airport. Troops also intervened when protesters tried to storm the gates of the Pashupatinath Temple.

Earlier in the day, the army announced that it would take over security duties from 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday. The statement from the Public Relations and Information Office said that some groups were taking advantage of the difficult situation and causing serious damage to ordinary citizens and public property.

It warned that if violence continued, all security forces, including the army, would be mobilized. The statement also called on the public to cooperate and refrain from destructive actions.
