More than 50,000 underground shelters have been built in Finland, capable of accommodating almost the entire population of the country, Bild reports.

Finland has not stopped building bunkers and continues to do so to this day. By law, every building with an area of more than 1,200 square meters must have at least one underground shelter.

The number of bunkers across Finland can accommodate approximately 4.8 million people, while the country’s total population is 5.5 million. For comparison, Bild notes that the underground shelters in Germany currently can accommodate only 1 percent of the country’s population.

If necessary, these underground shelters can be used not only by Finnish citizens, but also by guests of the country. Civil defense instructor Tomi Rask stated that these bunkers are capable of withstanding “even a nuclear strike.”
