The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has sent a warning to California law enforcement that Iran may be considering the state as a potential target for retaliatory strikes. According to ABC News, the agency fears Iran could use drones to attack the US west coast.
"We recently received information that as of early February 2026, Iran was allegedly planning a surprise drone attack from an unidentified vessel off the US coast, specifically targeting locations in California," the FBI notice states.
However, the agency does not have information on the exact timing of the alleged attacks or specific targets. US intelligence is also expressing concern that Mexican drug cartels are making increasing use of drones.
