US President Donald Trump stated that the US has held active negotiations with Iran and that both sides have reached "important common ground," Reuters reports.

Trump said that the talks held on Sunday will continue on Monday.

"We had very, very productive talks. We'll see what comes of them. I would say that we've come to agreement on many important points, almost all of them. Today we will probably hold talks by phone," he said.

Trump added that the negotiations were conducted by his special envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

He did not name the person in Iran with whom the US was negotiating, but said that a senior, respected leader participated in the talks.

Trump stated that the US has received no word from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. He said he does not know whether Khamenei is alive, and added that he does not wish for his death.
