Poland has granted individuals suffering from alcoholism the right to receive a monthly allowance, a representative of the country’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) announced.

“People suffering from alcoholism who are unable to work due to this condition are now entitled to a monthly benefit,” the representative said.

According to him, the amount of the payment depends on the degree of disability caused by alcoholism. The ZUS representative specified that the monthly allowance amounts to 1,971 zlotys (about $530.8) gross for full incapacity and 1,478 zlotys (about $398) gross for partial incapacity.

He emphasized that simply declaring oneself an alcoholic is not enough to qualify for the benefit — medical documentation confirming the diagnosis and treatment attempts must be provided.

The ZUS representative also said that the agency expects roughly 50 million zlotys (around $13.5 million) to be allocated annually for the payment of this “alcohol allowance.”
