European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen has urged EU citizens to reduce car travel amid the energy crisis and the situation surrounding Iran.

“The more we can do to save oil, especially diesel and aviation fuel, the better it will be for us,” he said.

According to him, the situation remains “very serious,” and EU countries should follow the International Energy Agency's recommendations, Bild reports.

Among the proposed measures are reducing highway speed limits by 10 km/h, expanding public transport, and introducing restrictions on cars in major cities.

“Mobility, whether by car or plane, should not become a privilege for the wealthy,” responded Michael Jäger, head of the European Taxpayers’ Association.

He also accused EU leadership of double standards and called for focusing on a stable energy policy instead of giving citizens “patronizing advice.”
