As part of diplomatic agreements between Tehran and Paris, two French citizens previously convicted in Iran have been released and left Iranian territory today, Tuesday, April 7, reports IRNA.

According to IRNA’s Foreign Policy Department, the release resulted from a bilateral agreement under which France fulfilled a number of reciprocal conditions.

In particular, as noted by the Iranian agency, Paris committed to fully releasing Ms. Mahdieh Esfandiari. She was reportedly released several weeks ago and is free to return to her home country at any time.

The French government also officially withdrew its complaint against Iran at the International Court of Justice.

The two released individuals are Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris. They had previously been found guilty of:

  • Spying for French intelligence services.
  • Conspiring to commit crimes against the national security of Iran.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the release of the two French citizens after three and a half years of imprisonment in Iran.
