Incumbent Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh won 97.8% of the vote and was re-elected for a sixth consecutive term, Reuters reported on April 11.

Djibouti, home to fewer than one million people, is situated on the Gulf of Aden at the entrance to the Red Sea and hosts military bases belonging to the United States, China, France, Italy, and Japan.

Following his victory, Guelleh posted a photo of himself on X with the French caption "RÉÉLU" — meaning "re-elected."

Reuters notes that the 78-year-old's win was never in doubt: Guelleh has held office since 1999, when he was elected to succeed his uncle Hassan Gouled Aptidon, and his party dominates the country's national institutions.

The agency adds that last October, parliament voted to abolish the 75-year age limit for presidential candidates and also scrapped a referendum previously required to approve a new constitution. The two main opposition parties boycotted the election.
