The Council of Representatives (parliament) of Iraq has voted to elect Nizar Amidi, a candidate from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, as the new president of the republic, Iraqi news agency INA reports. According to the agency, 227 deputies voted in his favor, while the second candidate, Mutanna Nadir, received 15 votes, and 7 ballots were declared invalid. It was previously reported that incumbent president Abdel Latif Rashid had decided to withdraw from the presidential race.

The 57-year-old Amidi served as Iraq's Minister of Environment from 2022 to 2024 and worked for more than 15 years in the country's presidential administration, including as senior adviser and head of the presidential office.
