The Armenian government allocated Thursday AMD 176 million to the penitentiary service of the Justice Ministry in order to carry out major repairs of penitentiary institutions.
The question was presented by Justice Minister Rustam Badasyan to improve the living conditions of convicts and detainees.
Funds have been not allocated for the last 10 years for construction and major repairs, water supply and sanitation networks in penitentiary institutions.
According to the draft decision of the Armenian Government, it is envisaged to allocate money from the Armenian Government Reserve Fund and the tender should be reportedly announced to start the works.
According to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, building a new penitentiary will be faster than renovating it.
