Two Israel Defense Forces pilots were killed Monday night when their military helicopter crashed off the coast in northern Israel, The Times of Israel reported.

The third crew member was rescued and hospitalized with moderate injuries at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

The hospital said he was in stable condition.

IDF search and rescue teams pulled two other crew members out of the water and carried out resuscitation measures, but were unable to save them.

According to the military, the survivor was a patrol officer. The crew of a crashed helicopter usually consists of a pilot, co-pilot and naval officer.

The helicopter crashed into the Mediterranean Sea near the port city of Haifa. The crash happened close enough to the coast that the residents of the city saw the flames from the coast and reported it to the police.

Israeli Channel 12 reported that the helicopter was flying at low altitude before the crash.

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known, but, apparently, this is the result of a technical malfunction, and not an attack.
