The upcoming parliamentary election in Armenia are very important because it is a historic opportunity for the country, and, by the way, also for its region to enter a completely different phase in its history. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is in Germany on an official visit, stated this during a meeting held at the German Council on Foreign Affairs in Berlin—and responding to a question about to what extend the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan is connected with his person.

There is now an unprecedented opportunity to establish lasting peace. This is very important for protecting and strengthening the statehood, independence, and sovereignty of the countries of the region because when people ask why this agreement became possible now and not a few years ago, there are many factors. But one of the most important factors that has influenced this agreement is the mutual understanding of shared interests by the countries of the region, Pashinyan added.

Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan became independent countries in 1991 as a result of the collapse of the Soviet Union, and this was, in a sense, a completely new situation, but not entirely a new perception of what had happened or what was happening, he noted.

The most important factor regarding this peace agreement is the new perception, the new perspective concerning the region—a new perception that truly creates an unprecedented situation, and one can rely on this to make the countries of the region more independent, more sovereign, and more secure, Pashinyan said.

This is a joint achievement for both Armenia and Azerbaijan, and it is a very important achievement also from the perspective of their internal politics, the Armenian PM emphasized.
