YEREVAN. – Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will travel to the Belarusian capital city Minsk on April 29, to participate in the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting during which, in all likelihood, an agreement will be signed on Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union (CU), Haykakan Zhamanak daily reported.

“Armenian Deputy Minister of Economy Karine Minasyan, [who is] head of the working group that prepares Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union, told this to our reporter.

“According to Minasyan, the major works envisioned by the [accession] roadmap are completed, and if the working group is unable to coordinate some negotiation issues prior to the noted day, the presidents will do this in person,” Haykakan Zhamanak wrote.

Following the talks that were held on September 3, 2013 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. In December 2013, the “roadmap” for Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union was adopted. And in January of this year, the Government of Armenia approved the action plan for the implementation of this “roadmap.” The formal joining is expected in May. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union.
