Pope Francis received U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday, Repubblica reports.

At the outset of the meeting, the Pope gifted the American diplomat his theological work "Joy of the Gospel."

Kerry thanked him for the gift, noting that he will keep the book like an apple of his eye.

The work includes the Pope's appeal to bishops, priests and all faithful laypeople on disseminating the Gospel in the modern world.
