YEREVAN. - President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has signed a decree on posthumously awarding serviceman Garik Vardanyan with the Medal for Military Service, the press-service of the Armenian President's office reports.

Vardanyan was severely wounded on December 30, 2016, as a result of the Azerbaijani armed forces’ ceasefire violation in a northeasterly direction of the Karabakh-Azerbaijan line of contact. Subsequently, he was helicoptered from NKR capital city Stepanakert Military Hospital to Yerevan.

The serviceman was to be discharged from the army on Tuesday.

Garik Vardanyan was from Aygestan village of Armenia’s Ararat Province.
