YEREVAN. – The Minister of Defense of Armenia, Davit Tonoyan, does not agree with the view that participation in the humanitarian action in Syria means getting involved in the conflict.

“The humanitarian action will be taken under the call by the UN,” Tonoyan on Friday told reporters at Yerablur Military Pantheon in capital city Yerevan. “How can female doctors get involved in the conflict? Or the deminer if he is participating in a humanitarian action?”

Earlier, speaking about Armenia’s Syria humanitarian mission which Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had announced, the defense minister had noted as follows: “They are specialists—doctors, humanitarian deminers—of the humanitarian domain of the [Armenian] armed forces. Also, a personnel ensuring safety will be involved to ensure their activities. About 100 people. Participation in these humanitarian activities stems from our national interests.”
