At least five people have been killed as Hurricane Dorian continues to batter the Bahamas, BBC reported.

Some 13,000 houses are feared damaged or destroyed, according to the International Red Cross.

Gradually, the hurricane loses its strength: on Tuesday it weakened to the third category, however, torrential rains, hurricane winds and the water it drives on the coast will threaten the inhabitants of the island of Grand Bahamas for at least another day. The maximum wind speed recorded on Tuesday reaches 205 km / h.

The US National Hurricane Center reports that Dorian has now shifted north of Greater Bahamas, where about 50,000 people live. During the day, the hurricane moved 20 km. Now the hurricane is inactive, it is assigned the third category on the Saffir–Simpson scale.

The agency warns that Dorian can still cause gusts of wind at speeds of up to 250 km per hour and rise of water level of 3-3.5 m, recommending that residents of the Greater Bahamas remain in shelters.

In the Palm Beach County of US, Florida, located 160 km west of the hurricane, wind gusts of up to 93 km / h are recorded.

According to the BBC Weather Service, the wind in the center of the hurricane spins with such force that its core collapses.
