There are speculations that the US is preparing to deploy 50 nuclear warheads to Greece, which are stored at the Incirlik base in Turkey, the Greek City Times reported.

The newspaper noted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to expel the Americans from the airbase, and about the attempts of officials in Washington to leave Incirlik because of Ankara's increasingly alarming foreign policy.

Questions are being raised about the future of Incirlik base, which houses US nuclear warheads, especially after a period of a sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Ankara last year.

Erdogan said in December that Turkey could close the base in response to threats of US sanctions and a US Senate resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

Erdogan's recent foreign policy has prompted US officials to step up preparations for withdrawal from Incirlik Air Force Base, senior Republican Senator Ron Johnson and US analysts told the Washington Examiner.

Johnson's statements came as tensions escalated between Ankara, on the one hand, and Athens and Nicosia, on the other, over hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Mediterranean.

Meanwhile, as Johnson noted, the US is expanding and improving military cooperation with Greece.

The Greek Times reported that Erdogan is becoming increasingly isolated in this escalation, noting that Turkey has not received the support of any state against its aggressive actions against Greece and Cyprus.
