Mayor of Yerevan Hayk Marutyan today attended the solemn ceremony dedicated to the 77th anniversary of the Siege of Leningrad. The mayor and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin laid flowers in front of the monument to the children of Leningrad located in the children’s park in Arabkir District of Yerevan.

Among the attendees were members of the Council of Elders of Yerevan, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and students of the Pushkin and Blok Russian schools of Yerevan.

Nearly 630,000 peaceful civilians fell victim to the Siege of Leningrad that lasted 872 days (September 8, 1941-January 27, 1944) during the Great Patriotic War, 100,000 Armenians participated in the liberation of the city, of which nearly 20,000 were killed. During the siege, 500 children of 7 orphanages and rural kindergartens of Leningrad were evacuated and took shelter in Armenia.

In his speech, Hayk Marutyan stated that the endeavor of the people of the seized Leningrad must set a brilliant example for the current and future generations.
