I am concerned about the ongoing destruction of old Yerevan, which is about to perish. This is what Russian architect Andrey Ivanov, who has written books about Yerevan and Gyumri, told reporters I Yerevan today.

According to him, the heritage of old Yerevan that existed in the late 19th century is perishing at a rather rapid pace.

“Yerevan faces very serious problems with the preservation of the city’s heritage. Due to the intensive construction of multi-story buildings in central Yerevan, many monuments have already been destroyed. Despite the statements on the restoration of Yerevan, nothing is being done. This is very bad because the city is losing its identity,” Ivanov stated, adding that the picture is totally different in Gyumri where the old city is being reborn and by residents and private entities at that.

“This will help turn Gyumri into a very inviting city,” the architect emphasized.

Former Prime Minister of Armenia Karen Karapetyan took the first step to make Gyumri an inviting city.
