North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said Sunday that he is stepping down from his post and leaving the post of head of the ruling Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDU) party. The politician's statement was broadcast on the official SDSM Facebook page, TASS reported.

Zaev noted that he did not consider it necessary to hold early parliamentary elections, and said that he would continue to act as prime minister until the formation of a new cabinet.

His resignation statement came after summing up the results of the municipal elections in North Macedonia, in which the opposition achieved success.

The politician congratulated his opponents on the victory and said that he accepts responsibility for such a development of political events, including the results of the elections.
