A city prosecutor's office building is on fire in Almaty, Sputnik Kazakhstan reports.

Earlier, smoke was coming from the Auezov district branch of the Nur Otan Party in Almaty. In addition, nearly three thousand protesters with rubber batons stormed the Almaty akimat, with police defending themselves with stun grenades.

A state of emergency has been imposed in Kazakhstan's capital city. The respective order was signed by the country's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

This morning, President Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government. Alikhan Smailov will temporarily perform the duties of the prime minister. Members of the Cabinet will continue in their duties until the approval of the new government.

Recall that protests over the sharp increase in gas prices began in Mangistau immediately after the New Year. Actions took place in Zhanaozen, Kuryk, Akshukur, Aktau, and other settlements of the region after the price of gas for refueling vehicles doubled to 120 tenges per liter.
