Indian police arrested nine people, including ticket sellers and contractors, as part of an investigation into the collapse of a pedestrian bridge that killed at least 134 people, many of them children.

Surveillance video footage taken just before the collapse shows a group of young men taking pictures of other guys trying to swing the suspension bridge in Morby from side to side, after which it falls into the river. The cables couldn't take the strain.

The colonial-era bridge over the Machhu River was crowded with tourists enjoying the holiday festivities. People ended up in the river about 10 meters deep after the fall.

One of the victims, Ashwin Mehra, who was being treated for leg and back injuries, told reporters that he and six others made it to shore holding onto the bridge's metal railing and netting.

A high-ranking police official said nine people, including management staff, ticket booths, and three security guards, were arrested for failing to control the crowds.

According to Ashok Kumar Yadav, among those arrested were two people who received a contract to renovate the facility, which was built in 1877. He added that there would likely be more arrests.

Local officials said that the clock and the electrical company responsible for the bridge had not informed the authorities that the bridge would be reopened last week after repairs, adding that no certificate of suitability for public use had been issued.
