Lawyer Natasa Pirc Musar has won the second round of Slovenia's presidential election and will become the first female head of state, Reuters reported.

According to the election commission, based on 86.7 percent of the votes counted, Pirc Musar, 54, won 53.83 percent of the votes in the second round, while her rival, right-wing politician and former foreign minister Anze Logar, won 46.17 percent.

According to the commission, the turnout was 49.9 percent.

Although the role is largely ceremonial, the president is commander-in-chief of the armed forces and also appoints several high-ranking officials, including the governor of the central bank. Most nominations must be approved by parliament.

Slovenia's new president will succeed Borut Pahor. Pahor, a former mannequin, is often publicly cited as Instagram president for his frequent use of the social network.

Pirc Musar, a former TV host turned influential lawyer, advocates for human rights, the rule of law and social welfare issues.
